Abstract Gender mainstreaming strategy is a strategy to achieve gender equality for both gender. This strategy initiated by United Nations in third world converence on women in Nairobi in 1985. It has been approved unanimously by international and local NGOs. United Nations Fund for Women (UNIFEM) which was established in 1976 by United Nations to ensure the participation of women in all level. UNIFEM implemented gender mainstreaming strategy during their mission in Burundi since 1994. After the catastrophe of Burundian civil war, UNIFEM implemented the strategy to achieve gender equality in Burundi by promoting women’s participation in all levels.
