Chinas Aggressive Foreign Policy on Territorial Dispute in East China Sea:Foreign Policy Analysis Under Hu Jiantaos Administration

Abstract Policy makers across the world set eyes on current China‟s international behavior. Empowered by modernised military power, China has actively carried out aggressive approach in the East China Sea, damaging relations with its neighboring countries as well as the United States. China‟s military has heated up the tension in the region by regularly interfering Japan and U.S. warships passing the sea. China also involves in military tension with Japan regarding their respective territorial claim on Senkaku/Diayou Island. Not only generate uneasiness and tension in Asia, they also are different with the principle of “peaceful development” in China‟s foreign policy. This issue generates curiousity about China‟s real intention and driving factors behind these aggressive moves. Looking at China‟s foreign policy discourse as a problem, this Skripsi investigates and explains the determinant of China‟s aggressiveness under Hu Jintao administration. The writer identify and examine both national and international political constraint that shaped China‟s foreign policy decision making on East China Sea during his term in office. This writing argues that there are 3 primary drivers behind current China aggressive behavior, namely energy issue, popular nationalism, and deterrence factor.
