Abstracts Tattoo is one of the oldest cultural heritage in the world, even in Indonesia. Tattoo in Indonesia first to be found in Mentawai and Dayak tribesand use to indicate social class in the group that obtained with doing certain things and some rituals. But these days tattoo can be owned by anyone, as long as it has the money to pay the tattooing itself. This research describes the reasons behind getting a tattoo and how exactly the meaning / interpretation of the tattoos itself getting shifted nowadays, especially in Yogyakarta. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative methods, and data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, and documentation. The informants were selected in this research specifically consists of three professions, which is a water canon BRIMOB unit members, the head of a private kindergarten, a student, and a student who also a housewife, which all of them have tattoos and live in Yogyakarta . Research found a number of categories tattoos meaning among the informants, such as positive meaning, neutral meaning, and others. In addition, the factors behind the decision to get tattoed consists of social internal and social external factors. And so, the meaning of those tattoos are very sacred for it’s owner. Research also found that beside of the efforts to re-express tattoo through their way to interprate their tattoos, informants also reflecting the tendencies of the society of the spectacle.
