Abstract The study of Russian politics is an interesting one, as it requires a deeper understanding than just through the eye of power. Since its early development, theory of constructivism has provided a deeper analysis of international relations phenomenon through the concept of identity. Thus, Constructivism plays such a significant role in the study of Russian politics. Since his inauguration as president of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin has proved for many times that Russia is an aggressive state which involvement in international arena is significant. Through his policy in the Syrian and eastern Ukrainian conflicts, Russia has delivered such highly complex foreign policy that generates a wide variety of response from the international community. In analysing Russia’s aggressive manner of conducting foreign policy, constructivism would refer back to the concept of identity as the most important factor in Russia’s policy formulation. The main argument presented in this thesis is that Russia’s foreign policies are mainly influenced by its identity as a great power and a religious orthodox country. Both of these identities were created through Russia’s social interaction with the involved actors which includes Syria, Ukraine, and the West. In-depth analysis regarding the relations between identity and Russian foreign policy are revealed to have an additional contributing factor that in the end ties the two variables together.
