Negosiasi Budaya Batak Toba di Yogyakarta:(Studi kasus terhadap Interaksi Interkultural Masyarakat Batak Toba di Yogyakarta).

ABSTRACT Batak people are well-known for their highly respected culture. It occurs because Batak people, no matter where they are, are constantly preserving the existence of values and social system until it becomes a custom. These customs eventually develop into a social identity in the society. The philosophical values that appear from the culture also make the Batak Toba society becomes one of the migrant communities in Indonesia. Yogyakarta is one of the cities which are chosen by the migrants of Batak Toba. Even though Yogyakarta is famous for its pleasant state and affable people, in their early days, Batak people find it difficult to interact with the people of Yogyakarta. The different cultures and social values require them to adapt and adjust their behavior so that they can be accepted in society and every matter can be solved. These are the beginning of a Negotiation of Batak Toba Culture. This research aimed to discover the process and form of culture negotiation that occurred in Batak society. This research employed a descriptive method. The methods of data collection were biographical method, up close interview, and library research. There were three respondents in this research settled throughout Yogyakarta. There were three critherias in determining the respondents, such as the amount of time that they stay in Yogyakarta, educational background, marriage type, and the understanding of culture of both their own (Batak) and Yogyakarta. The data analysis began with the textural description concerning the respondents’ habits. The micro analysis was then combined and being analyzed again until it constructed the conclusions which become the answer of the research objectives. The result of the research indicates that there are factors which affect the occurrence of negotiation of culture, such as family for the heterogeneous family, occupation, and interaction opportunity. These are three factors also influence the form and process negotiation of Batak Toba Culture following Batak Toba society in Yogyakarta. The form of negotiation in Batak Toba Culture is acculturation; whereas the type is strong and insubstantial, and the process of negotiations in Batak Toba Culture is able to happen both rapidly and gradually.
