This uniqueness came from pacifism nature derived from its own constitution and Yoshida doctrine. Japan military power level isn’t sufficient to handle security threats coming from its hostile neighbors countries such as North Korea, China, and Russia. Japan was able to survive this condition because it has formed alliance with United States since Cold War era and able to defend Japan’s security and interests. United States failed to fulfill its role as Japan’s protector when faced with China declaration of its Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) which covers the airspace of Senkaku Island, one of Japan’s territories. United States was not able to pressured China using military, economy, and politic to cease its ADIZ expansion. This case shows that United States can’t be relied upon too much and left Japan’s security vulnerable. The Japanese government realized that they have to be more military independent by exploiting its own military potential, open more diplomatic and joint defense with other country to ensure domestic safety. Defense policy of Japan became more assertive because the governments have made military as important as diplomatic to defend country interests. This have leads Japan defense posture to became a normal state with exclusive sovereignty to freely construct its own defense, able to contribute more active in military, and has the same status in bilateral/multilateral joint defense.
