ABSTRACT Tourism is one aspect who has a strategic position in economy and society development. The impact from tourism brings the multiplier effect in every event. Today’s trend brought MICE tourism became one of the potential tourism in Yogyakarta. The main factor behind this condition is facilities and infrastructure availability to organizing MICE activities, include meeting room and ballroom in almost all star hotels in Yogyakarta. Access to reach Yogyakarta through various channels also cause an increase MICE tourism. Those certainly balanced by the uniqueness and divers performing arts/tourism interests which became a main factor reason to many tourist to visit Yogyakarta. But it is undeniable in the development, there are some problems ahead. Promotion is less than optimal because Badan Promosi Pariwisata Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta has not been formed and less attention from Badan Pengembangan Industri Pariwisata Yogyakarta, unsynergistic coordination between stakeholders and also an overlapping accommodation growth factors, even the policy decision from minister of state instrument utilization and bureaucracy reformation (MenPAN-RB) that restrict meeting activities outside the agency office. Therefore, it is important to look and examine more deeply about the problems and response from each actor to related issues, with a purpose to making MICE tourism in Yogyakarta as one of the main tourism and could make a major contribution to tourism world not only in Yogyakarta but also Indonesia. Thus it needs a comprehensive understanding for the development of MICE tourism in Yogyakarta. Keywords: development, MICE tourism, problematic
