ABSTRACT People in river floodplain are one of urban elements. In realizing comfortable urban spatial plan for its population, ignorance of this area planning only creates homework for the future. This research discusses study of people in river floodplain from risk and relation space perspective. Risk perspective used in this research is viewing risk threat over spatial arrangement in Winongo river floodplain done by government and non government institutions. In addition, forms of people response over bottom up struggle are appeared in this research. Problems studied in this research are “ What people in Winongo river floodplain at Kricak subdistrict do to adapt to risk and to choose to stay in the area?” and “What are response of people in Winongo river floodplain at Kricak subdistrict to management done by external party over their area?” The first question is used to identify ways the people adapt to risk and make strategy in keeping their settlement. The second question is used to see response of the people over management from external and to map actor involving in the issue. This research combines two data collection technique. First, structured interview and unstructured indepth interview. Response obtained from questionnaire is intended to describe social phenomena that can be measured and presented in figure, while indepth interview result more specific data in micro-sociology study. Using Henri Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space and Ulrich beck’s risk society theory, researcher presents two critiques over phenomena in field. First, people in Winongo river floodplain have undergone change in their view over risk. They did not view physical risk (natural disaster) as being afraid of; they view that they should beware of threats from external in form of river floodplain management. Second, created production of relation space in form of social-economic cooperation among people there begin from close relationship among the people related to strategy for adaptation and survival in Winongo river floodplain at Kricak subdistrict.
