ABSTRACTION This study aims to determine the interpretation of the audience towards messages in Hanung Bramantyo’s film, Tanda Tanya. In addition, this study also aims to determine the factors that build interpretation of the audience towards the film and understand the message of religious tolerance in the film This research is a qualitative research method of reception analysis. The subjects were audience which have various backgrounds and had watched Tanda Tanya. The study focused on audience reception to the film. The results showed that: (1) different audiences interpret the films message differently anyway. This shows that the audience has its own power of understanding text so that text producers can’t impose a specific meaning to the audience, (2) the factors that build the interpretation are also vary.
