ABSTRACT Nowadays, education seems to be in a coma due to the strict curriculum. The existence of arts education is an alternative which were believed by Freire to model his concept, the concept of education which was liberating through conscientization or realization. However, in the practice of liberating through arts education which aims to encourage students in improving appreciation, expression, and creativity skills, there was found an anomie in arts education itself. The problem formulation of this research was to find out the cause of an anomie reproduction from the practice of liberating in arts education. This research aimed to understand and describe comprehensively on how students understood the liberation in arts education. Seeing the occurence of anomie reproduction, this research also aimed to know the cause of the occurence of anomie factor and the steps which the school went through to reduce anomie. In the process of planning and implementing, the research was applied qualitatively with descriptive analysis methodology. Gathering data technique were done by observing and interviewing using snowball. The research setting was in Sekolah Menengah Musik (SMM) Yogyakarta on Jalan PG Madukismo, Bugisan Selatan, Yogyakarta. This research involved nine informants consisting of four students and five teachers. Based on the results of the research, there was an anomie with the occurence factors seen from the students analysis which covered as follows: enrolling SMM Yogyakarta motivation where students have no corresponding motivation upon what expected when they wanted to enroll in SMM Yogyakarta, arts interpretation, and students activities at school. Moreover, the other factor was seen from teachers’ roles at school by underlining teacher’s teaching method which were applying banking system teaching method. Liberation in arts education underwent a process; by applying conscientization or students realization. Realization was undergone to make students be able to express their appreciation, expression, and creativity. The factors mentioned were not supporting realization process in arts education, albeit they were restraining student’s creativity. The conclusion of the research was there was found a restraining act in arts education. Although student’s appreciation, expression, and creativity were significantly shown when working on arts, students were restrained by the curriculum; in forms of general knowledge subjects and teacher’s teaching methods. This condition were becoming complicated with the occurence of student’s act of self-rebellion in which they didn’t want to study general knowledge subjects resulting on anomie reproduction in arts education. This was unfavorable since it might result as student’s obstacle in accomplishing some achievements either in arts or in education.
