ABSTRACT Military institution is seen as a male-dominated area. This is supported by the assumption that men have a mental, stamina, strength and fighting instincts superior to women. Kowad existence in the midst of masculinity culture making it as an anomaly, because generally most military personnel are male Korem 072 / Pamungkas as one of the regional military commands in Yogyakarta Province and part of Central Java is one of the representation of Indonesian National Army. The representation is shown in the activities and policies, including those which concerned with Kowad personnels. By looking at Korem 072 / Pamungkas as the representation of Indonesian National Army, this conducted research aimed to find out how the military institution, in this case Korem 072 / Pamungkas looked at gender equality in the institution, as well as how gender equality received by Kowad personnel. Kowad which was originally established to meet the non-combat unity, is slowly changing by the times. This research uses descriptive qualitative method implemented in Korem 072 / Pamungkas, the units below and detachment supporters with the use of the approach of feminism. This researches also uses qualitative data analysis techniques through observation, interviews, and literature. The key informants were taken from Yogyakarta Sub Choir Kowad coupled with institutional Korem 072 / Pamungkas and DIY BPPM using data retrieval methods chosen (purposive sampling). Based on the results of this study, it is found that Yogyakarta Sub Choir Kowad experienced a gender inequality that has lasted a long time since its establishment. However, inequality is perceived as a natural and normal. Korem 072 / Pamungkas stated that the distinction performed between male soldiers and female soldiers are corresponding with the nature of Indonesian women's dignity. The doubts of the different physical stamina and mental instincts battle between male and female soldier was the main reason there are differences in assignments given and positions in several fields. On the other hand, the Yogyakarta Sub choir Kowad assume that this current assignment difference between male soldiers with female soldiers have started to blur, although up to now Kowad position in the array is limited and there is no kowad personnel who occupy strategic positions.
