Perempuan Pengendara Vespa:(Studi pada Perempuan Pengendara Vespa Klasik di Yogyakarta

Abstract In recent years, we can see the emerging phenomenon of w omen Vespa riders. Women tend to think that mechanical machines are bothersome. As most people know, Vespa is a classic vehicle that requires special treatment on its machine. The contradiction occurring from the statements before is interesting to be researched beyond this phenomen on and that is how this research is starting from. The purposes of this research are to examine the catalyst of women choices on riding V espa based on their habitus before and the formation of the women Vespa riders’ identity. This research uses two theories. The first theory is Habitus taken from P ierre Bourdieu to examine the driving factors of women Vespa riders’ choices. The second is Anthony Giddens’ theory of identity. Giddens’ theory is being used to examine the formation of women Vespa riders’ identity. The method used in this research is qualitative method using descriptive analysis research. The location for this research is in Y ogyaka rta. The collecting data methods are observation and interview. This research involves 12 informants, consisting five female Vespa’s riders, three male Vespa’s riders, and four informants of the community w ho familiar w ith the women Vespa’s riders phenomen on. From this reseach we can find that women’s choices on riding Vespa based on personal taste. The ow nership of the economic capital, cultural capital, and social capital affect the women Vespa riders’ taste. The capital in habitus is also influencing the formation of women Vespa riders’ identity. The ownership of habitus capital on agent, women Vespa’s riders, influences the project or the formed identity. Furthermore, the existence of social structure in the form of external factors also had an influence on the identity which formed on women Vespa’s riders. Keywords: Women, Vespa, Habitus, Identity
