ABSTRACT The eruption of Mount Merapi in 2010 has caused various effects for the life of the local community. Kinahrejo, Pelemsari Hamlet, Umbulharjo Village became the most severely affected areas by the eruption as seen from the number of casualties and environmental damage suffered. People's lives after the eruption only sustained by the aid supplies that come one after another. The Government has been attempting to restore the social and economic conditions of society through livestock indemnity program and the program of "labor intensive", but these efforts have not been able to be used as a sustainer of life of the society. The opportunity then arose after the community was able to take advantage of the great numbers of visitors who want to see the remnants of the impact of the eruption in their area. This research was conducted to describe the strategies used by the eruption affected communities to run the livelihood and economic recovery after the eruption. To explain the strategies undertaken by the eruption affected communities in the hold of livelihood after the eruption, Researchers using the Social Action Theory of Max Weber which is part of the Social Definition Paradigm. This research uses historical qualitative research methods with a descriptive analytical approach. Retrieval technique using a purposive sampling informant already determined in advance, i.e. the affected communities of 2010 Mount Merapi eruption who became the maintainer or entrepreneurs in post-disaster tourism "Volcano Tour Merapi". Data was collected through the techniques of observation, interviews, and documentation of the daily activities of the eruption affected communities who became the maintainer or entrepreneurs in post-disaster tourism, and related parties. The results of this research show that the community has been able to overcome the post-disaster psychological problems, but they have not been able to recover their economic conditions through the farm sector as before. The postdisaster tourism is capable to be the sustainable livelihoods support, but it also has caused the local community becomes dependent on it. In response to this, the Government is not very supportive, but also not completely ban, given its activities in disaster-prone areas. The existence of post-disaster tourism seemed to be the only way out for the community to overcome the social and economic problems after the eruption, and maintains a sustainable livelihood independently, without having to rely on the programs and policies of the Government.
