ABSTRACT This study is an attempt to find the meaning behind the development of traditional medicine in Sleman regency. Based on the survey results revealed that the meaning behind the development of traditional medicine in Sleman regency because there a new trust on medical field. Trust of society about traditional medicine today is diferent with trust about traditional medicine in the past time although in a form that is almost same. This is happen because there are different time and influenced by social processes that follow. That social process can be observed from the motive / reason patients choose to use traditional medicine. Motive / reason people to use traditional medicine because there are negative experiences that they felt during access modern medicine (can not be cured), feeling bored and afraid during access modern medicine, hoping from patients to live more healthy (assumption that traditional medicine safety), any thought of them that traditional medicine cheap and able to cure diseases holistic / comprehensive. This study used descriptive qualitative interpretative research with a phenomenological approach. Data collection techniques used mixed data collection methods, namely quantitative and qualitative. The sampling technique used a quota sampling technique. Data was collected through interview by questionnaire, interview, observation and documentation. Informants in this study were 22 informants, which consist 16 patients of traditional medicine, 1 employee of Sleman District Health Office, and 5 traditional healers or traditional healers employees. While respondents as many as 30 peoples. Examination of validity data had done by: triangulation data and triangulation methods. Sleman selected for doing research because in this area there are many traditional medicine clinics as well as there is a development trend of traditional medicine that can be observed. Based on the findings in the field, still encountered some traditional healers who use their knowledge to monopolize the price of treatment. Patients are often disadvantaged because of this. Therefore we need the fast action of the central and local governments to solve this problem, so that peoples are not harmed. The results of this study can be used to make recommendation in social policy and health policy. In addition, researchers also noticed that the global market is actually influence on the formation of public trust. The global market requires that the orientation of people trust will be change, not least the society of Sleman regency. Market taking advantage of some people's boredom with modern medical system by offering a system of traditional medicine. But the evidence of this statement is necessary to do further research.
