2014 | Skripsi | Ilmu KomunikasiABSTRACT The FOX television series Glee has been a global sensation since 2009. It has stood out from other family drama series due to their ‘out-of-the-box’ style of addressing the most common yet controversial teen issues in the United States as well as nowadays culture. The objectives of this research are to see how Indonesian audience interpret teen issues portrayals on American musical drama series Glee and the factors that contribute to the interpretations. This research uses audience reception analysis framework in an ethnographic study within the scope of qualitative method. Four young people, age 18 to 22, with various level of consumption towards Glee’s products (TV series, film, reality show, music, social media updates); geographical, cultural and social background; life experiences; and field of expertise are interviewed separately within two sessions of in-depth interview. Their daily activities on social media are also lightly observed as metadata. This research focuses on how the informants interpret the portrayals of four big categories of teen issues: sexuality, self-concept, social and peer activities, and deviant behavior. This research finds that the majority of the informants interpret the issues from the position of negotiation. Meaning they understand the general idea of the issues, yet choose to continue interpreting from an alternative point of view based on their own experiences and references. However, one informant, who had spent their childhood in the US, is closer to the dominant interpreting position than the others are. This informant interpret the issues generally from the same position as the producers who use American values and context as the basis of constructing the meaning in the text. In conclusion, cultural proximity is the key to being able to interpret the meaning of the text the way it is meant to. Although, no individuals are exactly the same when it comes to what has shaped their understanding of a message. Therefore, however close the cultural proximity may be, it is considered highly unlikely for an audience to interpret a text the exact same way the producer wants them to interpret.
