Since the beginning of the conflict, the United States has taken clear stance, not to support the President of Syria, Bashar al Assad to remain in power and support the people of Syria to achieve their goals to create a democratic nation of Syria. In order to prove his support to the people of Syria, the United States has been taking various ways such as implementing economic sanction to the government of Syria, providing diplomatic support through the United Nations Security Council and Friends of Syria, helping to destroy Syria chemical weapons, and arming the recognized opposition in Syria, NCSROF. The first-three ways are considered to be the soft action, while the last one is considered to be the hard action. The changing respond from the soft to the hard one was triggered by the allegedly use of chemical weapons by the Syria government to attack the opposition and civilian in Ghouta, on August 2013. The use of chemical weapons in Syria did become the game changer of the United States’ role played in Syria. The stance of the United States in Syria conflict is based on the reasons that the United States foreign policy in the Middle East after 9/11 is promoting democracy. The struggle of Syrian is in line with the goal of United States foreign policy in the Middle East, that is why the United States gives his support. In addition, there are some of the United States’ national interests in the Middle East which are threatened with the ongoing conflict in Syria. They are the interest to prevent the proliferation of chemical weapons, battle against terrorism, prevent the spread of Iran and Russia’s influences, and the interest to keep the security of Israel. The conflict in Syria has put the United States in a very difficult situation, the price of inaction will be the same as putting national interest at risk. The best that the United States can do is the ones that have been demonstrated so far. Keywords: US support, US foreign policy in the Middle East, US national interest in the Middle East
