ABSTRACK Organisation is a place for people to channel their talents and interests to something. There are many types of organization that have been established to date, including an organization that engages in the art of music. One example of organization that engages in the art of music is a marching band. Marching band is a place for people to channel their talents and interests for music. In a show, marching band involves a lot of players that work together to produce music and visual harmony. To support the good performance, a marching band requires equipment such as musical instruments and uniforms. In addition, marching band also takes a lot of quantity of players. As a marching band, the Student Activity Unit Marching Band University of Gadjah Mada (Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa Marching Band Universitas Gadjah Mada/UKM Marching Band UGM) is an organization of extracurricular activities for students of Gadjah Mada University who are interested and talented in the arts of music. As a marching band and a group of student activity unit, Marching Band University of Gadjah Mada has assets such as uniforms, musical instruments and also the quantity of players that much. These assets are used as the supporting performances that will be played. In addition, these assets are not owned by units of other student activities primarily engaged in the arts. In this study, researcher focused on identity construction that constructed on the organization through the process of identification and categorization upon organization’s assets. This study used a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. Location of the research done in the Arts Center Building Koesnadi Hardjosoemantri (Purna Budaya) and the Student Center Gelanggang Mahasiswa which involved members of the Student Activity Unit Marching Band University of Gadjah Mada and other student activities engaged in the arts. This study uses primary data obtained from observation, interviews and literature. From the research conducted, it is concluded that the assets held by the Student Activity Unit Gadjah Mada University Marching Band is a factor that causes construction of identity on the student activity units. In the construction process, the assets that have been identified by the organization members of the Marching Band UGM as a symbol that became a hallmark and identity and maintained through certain behaviors. After going through the process of identification, then formed a label in the form of exclusive identity. Labels were constructed by members of the organization are considered less objective because it can be influenced by a sense of pride in the group (Esprit de Corps). It is therefore requires categorization process of other student activity units particularly in the field of art. Furthermore, the process of categorization to Student Activity Unit Marching Band University of Gadjah Mada through symbols that have been identified, establish an identity in the form of exclusive labels, well and the icon of Gadjah Mada University. However, the results showed that the process does not always produce an identity in the form of a label, but only categorize the symbols in a group just as a typical course.
