ABSTRACT East Asian security situation is very volatile in recent years to make Japan must rethink about its defense policy. The condition of East Asia in recent years has always been in the spotlight of the world, both in terms of economic strength and now security situation of the region. China's coercive nature against its neighbor, North Korea's provocative actions and disputed territories are the core security issues in the region. This then makes the Japanese realized that the pacifist constitution and the JSDF (Japan Self Defense Forces) will not be sufficient to respond to the security situation as it is today. In this regard, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe lead Japan’s responds by making more comprehensive defense policy such as the first ever National Security Strategy, National Defense Policy Guidelines changes, as well as the structural changes of the National Security Council. Those changes in defense policy is not enough to help curb the situation, because Japan does not have military power as its neighbors. This makes Japan should seek a strategic partner, India finally became a strategic partner of choice for Japan alongside with the United States. Japan has a good relationship with India and India currently has border problems with China, just like the Japanese. This makes Japan are sure to increase security cooperation with India to curb the situation in East Asia.
