ABSTRACT Arisan (a practice of social gathering whose members regularly contribute and take turns in winning an aggregate sum of money) has become an integral part of Indonesian society. People--starting from the lower class to the socialite-- has been familiar with the practice of arisan. So far, in most studies/research arisan is usually interpreted as a financial institution which can be functioned as a ‗safety valve‘ for society, especially in the time of crisis. However, many things that cause arisan has been agreed and integrated into our social life. These things no longer questioned or discussed by the public. This study was present to answer it, to find and search why can arisan agreed, accepted, and integrated into our social life in the society. This study was conducted in the village of Hargomulyo, Gedangsari District, Gunung Kidul Regency, Yogyakarta. The method used in this study is qualitative constructivist approach. Qualitative constructivist approach method emphasizes that reality is the result of complex discursive pratices, ideological effect, and the result of perspective. Thus, this research rests on a basic assumption that the practice of arisan—as a reality—in fact is the result of a social construction. This study argues that arisan and the practice of it, can be analyzed by using discourse theory, put forward by Michel Foucault. This study tried to explain the relation between knowledge, power, and subject that form the discourse of arisan. Knowledge, in this study, is narrowed down to two things: concept of harmony and the concept of money. These two concepts is integrated and implemented in the arisan and/or the practice of arisan conducted by people in Hargomulyo. Meanwhile, the Power in this study is not seen as a repressive power as the structuralist view, but the massive and productive power that makes a lot of people then agreed and implemented this practice of arisan in their social life. Similarly, subjects were also seen not as an autonomous subject, as the structuralist view. Subject, in the Foucault‘s theory of discourse, in fact is understood as an effect of the discursive process itself. Subject is disciplined by the discursive process. Society is constructed and changed, by the discursive process, then become what foucault says the docile bodies. Subject is disciplined by rules/regulation, and/or the normalization process in arisan. Discursive process of arisan that took place in Hargomulyo, is formed through a synergistic relation between power, knowledge, and subject, in ―smooth‖ ways not through violence. So then people in the society no longer need to question the truth of this practice of arisan. Arisan in the village is able to deconstruct the concept of arisan that has been widely known. Deconstruction is apparent when one of the members of 'win' and get the money, even when there are other members who are more in need, money can be borrowed by members. This is rarely the case in many arisan that we have seen so far. Finally, every member of the society have accepted it as something that has been attached to people‘s lives.
