Korean Pop sebagai Arena Budaya Baru :(Studi pada Grup Cover Dance X-School)

ABSTRACT X-school is one of K-pop cover dance group in Yogyakarta. X-school is founded because of the Korean popular culture or what is often called K-Pop. It draws the people’s hearts all over the world successfully, Indonesia is of no exception. Exactly in July 2012, X-school declared their group as male cover dance group, covering After School in Indonesia. Korean Pop is used by X-School as a new culture arena in the process of world culture competition. The method used in this research is the qualitative research method through ethnography approach. This is to know how the world competition process of culture experienced by this X-School cover dance group via the theory of circuit of culture and how the effect resulted by the X-School takes place. The researcher collects the data through observation and detail interview. In analyzing the data, she uses the perspective Storey of popular culture and the circuit theory by Paul Du Gay and Stuart Hall. Besides, she also uses the Stuart Hall’s identity concept and Judith’ Butler’s concept on permormativity. The result of this reseach shows that the process of competition of the culture experienced by X-School cover dance group is by regulation process, production, representation, consumption, and identity. By using the circuit of culture, it shows more clearly of how the inter-dependent relation among the components occurs. As a matter of fact, we can see the identity of X-School cover dance group on the official social media account or on the private social media account of each X-School member. And it can also be distinguished from fashion or costum that they wear. This is the fashion related to how the X-School consume or wear a product. The costume that they wear when they are on the stage repesents their identity product. Because of good regulation, X-School shows its identity successfully. The impacts resulted from X-School, by the culture competition process, brings about two points; X-School can create new identity and it can change the hobby into profession. The new identity is X-School as the first cover dance group covering After School that has performed totality dance and the costume that must be ready to meet pro and contra. xi By ensuring their nature talent, X-School is able to improvise their talent into hobby, and change hobby into profession that is profitable. That is the impact of the production of the culture competition process. Key words: Korean Popular Culture, Competing Culture Process, Circuit of Culture, Cover Dance.
