ABSTRACT This thesis research is intended to analyze how the commodification carried out by a group of “wayang dugem” in changing the traditional wayang art wayang arts purwa into dugem. What elements are incorporated into the art of wayang dugem, change what happened and how the forms of the performing arts that have been commodified, and how the response of the market to the art. This research is a descriptive qualitative research, the research results dideskripksikan through the narrative to answer the problem formulation research: how the commodification of art wayang kulit purwa prototype made by a group wayang dugem and how the results of the commodification puppet prototype. Theory is used to analyze the commodification theory karl marx and collaborated with modern performing arts strategy. Results obtained from the research is that the traditional art of wayang kulit purwa withdrawn from its function as a medium which contains guidance, structure and spectacle shifted into a spectacle or entertainment. Dugem wayang group incorporated elements of popular culture in the form of pop music, and adding foreign musical elements namely jazz and rock music. This is done to increase the selling price as a prototype wayang kulit purwa in perjual commodity traded in the market, then the wayang group dugem get rewarded in the form of profits. Commodification also change the shape of the art of puppet show wayang kulit dugem into the modern art market-oriented, based on consumer desires. Wayang dugem deliberately raised as a form of contemporary art of Wayang Dugem specifically for the younger generation of Middle and upper class, but in the end the art of wayang dugem is not sold in the market, it is because of the his fandom comes from the old group, while the elderly are less like art form too strayed far from wayang art in general. In addition, other factors are: the declining creativity dugem wayang artist, and stuck to the boring art form, and the non-acceptance of dugem wayang art form in the region of Yogyakarta.
