Resepsi Khalayak dalam Memaknai Masyarakat Minoritas Katolik Padang dalam Film Cinta Tapi Beda

ABSTRACT Misunderstanding of diversity has raised the urge to map out society based on majorities and minorities. This resulted in inter-ethnic relations that are often characterized by social prejudice in form of stereotypes, social distance, discrimination, and conflict. One of the stereotypes that developed in Indonesian society is Padang people are often associated with characters such as stingy, miserly, skilled in the trade, and society nomads. Many people of Padang also known as a very religious Muslim people. In fact, there are many non-Muslim people who live there and are not exposed by the media. Through the renowned cold hands duet director of Hanung Bramantyo and Hestu Saputra, the Cinta Tapi Beda (CTB) movie tried to explain reality of the Catholic minorities in Padang. However, the presence of Diana figures trigerred the debate in wider community. CTB was deemed to illustrate the contrary of the traditional live of Minangkabau people. Hanung is certainly not standing still, through his twitter account he denied that the film tells Diana as a Minang tribe, but just as the people of Padang. Based on these phenomena, researcher interested in studying it by using the method of reception analysis. The study analyzes the reception of the audience emphasizing the important points that people can interpret their own texts which they read and are not always in line with the ideology of mass media. Meanings that informant given in this study varied, which are the dominant reading (in line with the contents media), negotiated reading (partially accepted and partially rejected the contents media), and oppositional reading (reject completely). Media consumption helped build a critical mass attitudes in dealing with informants overview of today's society. The phenomenon that raised in CTB movie does not wholly denied by informant that happened plural in their living environment. Keyword: receptions, audiences, minorities, movie.
