ABSTRACT This thesis assesses the reason why Scottish people want to get independence from the UK. Economic reason is the strongest impetus for people to support the idea; however, Scottish identity also plays an important role especially to explain why they want independence now after more than 300 years of union. Devolution has given Scotland a chance to develop its own area with the establishment of Scottish Parliament and Scottish Government. However, it turns out that it is not enough to make Scotland and its people prosper even though they prove to have an excellent economic capability. This mainly caused by UK policies itself that does not apply well in Scotland, in the contrary; it fits well in London and Southeast England. Therefore, it creates regional inequality, in terms of income and GDP between Scotland and a whole UK. The impacts of devolution are also shown in declining support for UK and increasing number of people who feel more Scottish than British. The upcoming independence referendum is a result from a long historical process; even though everything they demanded had been granted by UK government – increased number of Scottish representatives in Westminster, re-establishment of Scottish Parliament, limited fiscal autonomy—but it did not resolve the inequality up until now. That is the reason why Scottish feels that it is the time for them to decide what the future of Scotland will be. Keywords: UK, Scotland, independence, inequality, identity, devolution
