ABSTRACT Kauman Village as the place of birth of Muhammadiyah, is often identified as the base for the traditional supporters of Partai Amanat Nasional. This identification comes from the assumption that PAN is the political party of Muhammadiyah followers. This is seen from the voting behavior of people of Kauman during Yogyakarta Mayoral election in 2011 which was joined by candidates from PAN, which were Hanafi Rais-Tri Harjun. Although in the end the election was won by Haryadi Suyuti-Imam Priyono, total vote in Kauman was dominated by Hanafi Rais-Tri Harjun. In reality, candidates other than Hanafi Rais-Tri Harjun were also Muhammadiyah figures respected in Kauman. So, it couldn’t be said that the factor influencing the voting behavior of people of Kauman in the mayoral election was only due to the closeness of Kauman with Muhammadiyah. These other factors were revealed by this study. This study was conducted using snowballing method. The author routinely visited Kauman and interviewed key figures who were considered able to represent the view of people of Kauman until comprehensive data was obtained related to factors influencing the voting behavior of people of Kauman in Yogyakarta Mayoral election in 2011. The study discovered that in Kauman social capital from Muhammadiyah values has been institutionalized. This social capital is their foundation and outlook on life in the dynamics of every field, including political dynamics. This social capital made people of Kauman have an awareness that they must vote for leaders who can realize people’s mandate well. Furthermore, it was discovered that historical and personal closeness between people of Kauman and PAN figures is maintained well to this day. The synergy between social capital factor and the factor of the closeness between people of Kauman and PAN eventually became the most influential things in the voting behavior of people of Kauman during the mayoral election. So, people of Kauman considered Hanafi Rais-Tri Harjun should be supported. Keywords; Kauman, Social Capital, Voting Behavior
