ABSTRACT New media is a convergence of audio/video technologies with the internet, which facilitates the interactivity between the users. In reality, the new media can be found in the form of mobile phone, e-mail, instant messaging, social network, and website. The new media, with all its characteristics such as interactivity, practicability, lower cost, faster distribution of information, and a wider scope, has stimulated the creation of new forms and patterns of communication, which later can be used by the civil society movements to achieve certain purposes. Jokowi-Ahok Social Media Volunteers (JASMEV) was one of that virtual civil society that carried out the political communication strategy to win the couple of Jokowi-Ahok by using the new media on Jakarta Gubernatorial Election in August-September 2012. The strategy consists of the distribution of positive news and clarification of negative issues on Jokowi-Ahok on the net, posting support to Jokowi Ahok ten times a day, an elegant way of campaign, the use of Twibbon and e-certificate, the use of hashtag dan mention on Twitter, as well as “Surat untuk Jokowi” competition and the distribution of pictures and caricature of Jokowi-Ahok on Facebook. Based on the findings of this research, it can be inferred that the successful JASMEV’s political communication strategy wad deeply influenced by three major factors: the thoroughness in making use of the characteristics of the new media, a well-structured yet flexible coordination and information-flow system, as well as being active in involving public’s aspiracy.
