ABSTRACT The church can not stand without an acceptance and support of the surrounding community . Therefore, the church needs to consider the appropriate approach and communication to the surrounding community, which in the studies of communication, it is called community relations. This community relations based on pluralism because the church is in a plural society and using pluralism approach to community relations. Many issues of pluralism in Indonesia such as the case of the church building, christianization issue, various misunderstandings and suspicions are the reason why the essential of community relations based pluralism conducted by all the churches in Indonesia. In particularly, this case study was to discuss how the implementation of community relations based on pluralism in GKI Gejayan, Yogyakarta. Informants consisted of a preacher and PR of GKI Gejayan and 15 surrounding communities. This research used a structured interview and observation techniques as well as patterns matching and explanations of analytical techniques. The results showed the relationship between GKI Gejayan and the community has been well done. There is an increase in the quality of the relationship. The proof is no more tension between GKI Gejayan and the surrounding communities after 2004. In addition, the participation of local communities in community relations program with an unexpected amount on some programs and actions, also indicates an increase in the relationship. However, this relationship has not reached an ideal level. This is due to constraints such as the complexity and dynamics of the community relationship based on pluralism that affect the steps strategies of GKI Gejayan.
