ABSTRACT Bilateral relationship between United States of America and Vietnam reached a new level after their normalization signed in 1995. Normalization of two countries threatened China, which had some major conflict about claim of South China Sea with Vietnam. China felt insecure because bilateral enhancement between USA and Vietnam had incerased USA presence in South China Sea. If compared, between China and Vietnam which are main actors of South China Sea, there was asymmetry of power. China was far stronger than Vietnam within every aspect. Based on that fact, Vietnam using impact of normalization with US as a factor that could increase Hanoi’s bargaining power when it came to face China in South China Sea claim. While the USA is not directly involved in the South China Sea dispute, its concern with the security of the sea-lanes and its insistence that peaceful means must be used to solve the region's problems have cautioned China to act carefully in its plans to recover its territories. China would have to respond wether Vietnam had their reliance on Washington when it have to face China in the disputes. Keywords: China, Vietnam,United States of America, normalization, dispute.
