ABSTRACT Middle East has once again become the center of public attention after the outbreak of Arab Spring. This phenomenon that started first in Tunisia has spread and affected almost all of major states in Arab world. Mass-led demonstration has succeeded to topple down several leaders that were considered to be corrupt and unsatisfactory towards their citizens, including Egypt, Libya, and Yemen. This thesis would like to focus on Yemen’s political uprising which started in January 2011. As a result from the uprising that was continued for 11 month, a deal has been made between President Saleh and a group of Gulf states, known as GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) which also was supported by United States. By signing the deal, President Saleh agreed to give up his position as an exchange of his immunity from prosecution. Thus, from that moment onwards, the process of Yemen’s political transition has begun. As for the process itself, it’s clear that there are a lot of states have been involved. One of them was United States which was a surprise since Yemen has become one of its closest allies. Yet, United States became one of the major supporters for Yemen’s transition. This fact has provoked a question regarding United States interest towards Yemen’s political transition process. Therefore, this thesis would concern about United States’ main interests towards Yemen’s stability which is threatened by the occurrence of youth uprising and political turmoil: first, containing influence of AQAP (Al-Qaeda in Arabian Peninsula); second, securing oil transportation route. Keywords: political turmoil, United States interests, AQAP, threats, security.
