2013 | Skripsi | Ilmu Hubungan InternasionalABSTRACT This paper argues that United States’ involvement in the South China Sea dispute has strong reasons and gives significant impact to the dispute. Jurisdictional claims in the South China Sea amongst claimants have increased the military activities in the region. It causes lots of concern from many parties, including the U.S., regarding the escalation of the disputes and the security of their national interests in the region. Therefore, U.S. needs to increase its presence and involvement in the dispute. These actions are intended to maintain U.S interests in the region and secure its national security, especially to preserve American global leadership, to maintain peace and stability, to secure shipping route in disputed area in order to increase U.S. military mobility, and also to strengthen U.S. economic ties with other claimants.This paper elaborates balance of power to explain the U.S. rolesand strategies in the dispute. Using the concept of balance of power, this paper finds that the U.S. involvement results insustained status quo of the disputes,although it is still possible that the dispute might turn into a war. U.S. strategies in this dispute are heavily correlated with its cooperation in Philippine and Vietnam in order to rebalance China’s influences in the region.
