Abstract Synergy Between the Government and The Local Businesses in Facing the Competition ACFTA Study Case : Subur Ceramic Yogyakarta One prominent practice in international relations in the last couple decades is international cooperation done by either one country with another country, one country with a region, or between regions. One example of economic cooperation that has been recently agreed between a country and a region is ACFTA (ASEAN-China Free Trade Area) between China and ASEAN countries including Indonesia. In this ACFTA frame, we could observe how the government and what measures that they take in order to protect and assist the local business to face the competition in this ACFTA scheme, resulting in a synergy between the government and the local businesses. In this regard, this research will try to find out for how much synergy formed between the government and the local businesses in facing the competition in this ACFTA scheme. This ACFTA scheme which began to be implemented in 2010 has been often predicted will harm the local businesses, for the local products will have less competitiveness compared to the products made in China. These kinds of predictions that often worry the local businesses in the way they responded to the commencement of this free trade agreement have made them a big concern for the government to explore what strategy can be used by the government and the local business to face this competition. This research will try to apply the use of strategy that focuses on the companies’ ability to manage their respective strengths to be their strategy to face new competitors. In addition, this research will also analyze on how to use a synergy formed between the government and the local businesses in facing this economic openness, which are by: diciplined support, public risk absorption, private-sector governance and public-private innovation alliances.
