2013 | Skripsi | Ilmu Hubungan InternasionalABSTRACT The issue of minority and national integration has become one of salient issues in contemporary global politics. Hwagyo, referred to overseas Chinese people either with Chinese or Taiwanese citizenship as long term sojourners, is a minority group in South Korea. They are still facing xenophobic attitude and discrimination in the midst of rising multiculturalism in South Korea. This thesis is designed to analyze xenophobic attitude towards hwagyo and its relevance to national integration in South Korea by addressing two research questions. First, why xenophobic attitude happened to hwagyo?; and second, how this xenophobic attitude affects national integration in South Korea? These research questions will be analyzed through the concept of minority, national integration, and rational choice. The thesis elaborates that hwagyo is still marginalized due to several factors which possess significant contribution to the formation of xenophobic attitude of Korean indigenous people. Xenophobic attitude is one rational way perceived by native Koreans as majority group in order to respond the threats (both real and potential) from hwagyo as minority group, especially in terms of socio-cultural and socio-economy. Despite several attempts made by government to overcome these culturally-rooted problems through policy formulation and efforts to embrace hwagyo as a part of South Korea’s national structure, the perception of majority is not immediately changed. Hwagyo is still being regarded as migrant group which is trying to adapt socially to South Korean society which assumes themselves as “pure country”. Xenophobic attitude and discrimination against hwagyo are not only bringing negative impacts to the majority-minority relations, but also certainly affecting the difficult process to achieve national integration in South Korea.
