ABSTRACT Nowadays the tourism industry has been developed very rapidly all over the world, as well as in Indonesia. Recently, Indonesia is intensively developing the tourism industry even to the stricken rural areas throughout Indonesia. One of the development is manifested in the form of rural tourism. This is expected to improve the welfare of the people in the rural areas. To see the impact to the people after the development of the rural tourism, this study compare two rural tourism in Sleman district, Sidoakur and Pentingsari. Both of them has the distinction, namely location, atraction and management of each rural tourism. By these distinctions, will affect the community welfare in the rural tourism. This study aimed at comparing the impact of the development of rural tourism on livelihoods in Sidoakur and Pentingsari in the field of business, employment and income received by the community after the development of rural tourism. This study is a survey and phenomenology research. The data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, observation and documentation. Next, the data was processed, analyzed scoring and described interviews into written form. The results showed, the impact of the development of rural tourism to community welfare gave different impact in each of them. To tourism village, Sidoakur, the development could not improve the community welfare since there are no opportunity to build business and new jobs so their income has not changed. While people in Pentingsari, the development gave them a positive impact on improving the welfare of its people. The creation of the field of business and job vacancy such as homestay rental, sale of products such as instant food and beverage which is typicall from rural tourism and tour guides. The recommended suggestion of this study is for the government of Sleman district to review the village which will be a rural tourisem by considering the readiness of the community and the tourism potential of the rural tourism in order to continue the development and provide training to every rural tourism in accordance to the tourism potential of each rural tourims. For the managers of the rural tourism, namely: to establish good coordination between managers and the the community, the manager continued innovation to make new development by creating a new tourism activities and which is able to attract tourists, provide training to the community, managers also should be more empowering young people to learn the culture and arts in the rural tourism. For the people in rural tourism Sidoakur and Pentingsari is trying to develop their creativity to support rural tourism.
