2013 | Skripsi | Ilmu KomunikasiAbstraction Merapi volcano eruption in late 2010 left many stories behind. Most notably on the way mass media (especially television) reported this disaster to public. There were many problems about the media coverage; from the lack of knowledge about disaster management to the dramatization of the news. Disaster journalism is the new genre of journalism that manages the way a mass media reports about disaster. Its principles consist of accuracy, humanism, prohibition of the traumatic things, coverage of the victim’s opinion, and the commitment to rehabilitation. These principles are not only based on the principles of journalism but also touch the issue about media ethics in disaster coverage. Indonesia is a susceptible country of disasters, therefore disaster journalism is very important to set the way mass media covers a disaster. This research talks about application of the principles of disaster journalism in TVOne’s “Breaking News” coverage during Merapi eruption. The programme received many critiques due to many errors in the coverage, from the false information from the reporter to the way the crews behave themselves in location. This research serves how far the application of disaster journalism in the programme. As a comparison, this research also includes NHK’s coverage on Great Tohoku Earthquake in 2011. Keywords:
