As one of the markets where traditional public utilities also support the local economy. Piyungan Traditional Market is one of the traditional market that has experienced revitalization in accordance with people's needs Bantul, particularly in Sub Piyungan. Complemented by several other supporting buildings which are expected to be a traditional market at a national level and pilot facilities in this market is quite complete. This research aims to analyze the potential and role of local government affecting the competitiveness of traditional markets and formulate strategy recommendation to do the traditional market to increase their competitiveness. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis techniques using a qualitative approach to analyze the potential and conditions of the factors affecting the competitiveness of traditional markets. Sources of data in the form of primary and secondary data. After extracting the data and do the analysis it is found that there are three roles of government that affect the competitiveness of traditional markets, namely the government's role as regulator, facilitator and a resource allocator. By focusing on the consumer, that is to understand the needs, wants, and expectations of consumers, service to consumers as well as possible is the key to win the tight competition. Support from central and local government in the form of allocation of funds and policies that are fair and do not overlap is expected to help improve the competitiveness of traditional markets. This is necessary in order to provide a form of competition between traditional retail and modern retail.
