Pragmatisme Chen Shui Bian Dalam Hubungan Taiwan China: Proactive Libralizination With Effective Management

2012 | Skripsi | Ilmu Hubungan InternasionalThe main purpose of this thesis is discussing about foreign policy making in Taiwan, especially related to it’s relation with China. Taiwan and China has a dispute over Taiwan status in international arena. As democratization have embedded in Taiwan society, the difference between the two chinese communities have became more apparent. The presidential election in 2000 has brought a surprising result. Chen Shui Bian, an opposition candidate, has won the election with only 39% votes. Deeply connected with the independent movement, Chen’s presidency adopted a more pragmatic approach in handling relation with China during the two years of his first term Presidency. A policy called proactive liberalization with effective management has been adopted in order to replace previous policy called no haste be patient in Lee Teng Hui Presidency. This policy was focused on relaxing the interaction between two communites, especially in economic sphere. The thesis will attempt to answer these question: what factors determined in the decision making process of Taiwan’s China policy: proactive liberalization with effective management during Chen Shui Bian first term of presidency? Using the funnel of causality theory by Rosenau, this thesis try to identify various factors according to its sources that affected Chen’s pragmatism in handling the relation with China. Pragmatism refers to a way of handling matters in which the decision maker was willing to compromise his/her ideology for gaining some political leverage.
