The Implications of the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) for the European Union

After its formal etablishment, the European Union has made tremendous efforts in pushing for integration in all aspects. With an integrated economy, the EU has since pushed for further and deeper integration within the realms of security and defence. The initial idea of a united security and defence policy was addressed in the Franco – British St. Malo Summit in 1998. Since then the ESDP has undergone immense development and change. This dissertation will elaborate the implications that the ESDP has towards the European Union. Keywords: European Union, ESDP, integration, security governance, European identity.
