Since its opening back in 2002, Guantanamo prison which is located in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is known as a sadistic prison which violates the human rights of its detainees and has become a global concern. Those arrested are people who are considered terrorists and/or the accomplices of Taliban and Osama bin Laden in the eyes of the United States. Some visible evidence of punishments seemed to be imposed only because of trivial errors, for example, putting towels, cups and utensils in the wrong position, exposing to interrogation, and insulting the Quran have approved human rights violations and international law in Guantanamo prison. Ironically, the United States is one of the countries ratifying the Convention Against Torture, the Geneva Conventions of 1949, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. All these covenants prohibit torture and degrading human dignity to anyone, including prisoners of war for any reason. The United States, as a country that upholds respect for human rights, continue to use coercive interrogation methods to the detainees and ignore the principle of state sovereignty, the importance and role of multilateral institutions like the UN, ICRC and regional organizations, as well as the provisions of international law such as the Geneva Convention on the bases of national security. Not long after the Guantanamo prison is opened and later the acts of torture and human rights violations in the prison were revealed, there appear a lot of reactions and criticism coming from the international world and tarnished the credibility of the United States in the eyes of the world organizations such as the UN, ICRC, Indonesian Red Cross, NGOs and human rights activists as well as the media that often express their protests against human rights violations at Guantanamo. Responding to such criticism, President Barack Obama promised to immediately close the Guantanamo prison. However, there are many complex legal challenges and security issues in fulfilling this promise to close Guantanamo and so far the plan has not yet been realized.
