STRATEGI ENCOUNTERING GLOBALIZATION: STUDI KASUS PROGRAM JAVA SUMMER CAMP 2009

Globalization has always been becoming interesting topic to discuss. It is not merely due to the substance of globalization which has always been growing rapidly but also the impacts given by globalization itself have been massively spread out. On the particular, the developments and impacts of cultural globalization in the regions of the states have led the topic to be observed. In Yogyakarta, globalization has been existing for many years. It has been changing and transforming Yogyakarta for some fields, especially the culture. The existence of globalization in Yogyakarta surely has given the positive and negative impacts to Yogyakarta. In this context, Yogyakarta is demanded to respond the coming of globalization in terms of its massive impacts to the change of Yogyakarta. The word ―encountering globalization‖ means as the responses given by Yogyakarta to face the globalization. It refers to the ideas of Kevin Robins that classify the responses into three kinds: totally receive, totally refuse, or accommodating/adjusting. One of those responses chosen by Yogyakarta will also describe the position of Yogyakarta in understanding the globalization: skeptic, globalist, or transformationalist. To analyze those things, the program of Java Summer Camp 2009 is the appropriate case study to describe which response is given by Yogyakarta to encounter globalization. At the end, the results of this research have shown that Yogyakarta has successfully adjusted and accommodated for the change of Yogyakarta due to the existence of globalization. In fact, Yogyakarta has also been able to develop the unique ways to manage and utilize the impacts given by the globalization, which also shows the position of Yogyakarta as the transformationalist.
