SEKURITISASI ISU PERUBAHAN IKLIM OLEH KIRIBATI

Amongst other Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Kiribati represents a unique case for examination of securitization on climate change issue. It is categorized as an island microstate which is the smallest of the small ones and one of the first nations to be submerged by the adverse impact of climate change. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that Kiribati can not obtain its goals to gain international support for the adaptation and mitigation of the impacts of climate change. This thesis attempts to discuss how Kiribati securitizes the issue of climate change for the sake of its future by making use of the facilitating conditions it has. The discussion will focus on three types of units involved in security analysis which is referent objects, securitizing actors, and functional actors. This thesis also argues that Kiribati has successfully securitized the issue since the audience accepts it as such.
