The main purpose of the thesis is discussing about how a leader of a country seek for foreign supports. The concern is brinkmanship strategy of North Korea’s supreme leader, Kim Jong-il. After the collapsed of Sovyet Union, Kim managed to keep his regime stay afloat and maintain his power over North Korea despite of economic struggle and foreign pressure. Kim made use of alliance between North Korea and China to gain resources and concessions from China thus support his survival as North Korea’s leader. Therefore, the thesis will attempt to answer question; How Kim Jong-il gain his resource and concessions support from China? What strategy did he use for that resources gain? What Kim had done could be explained using the concept of brinkmanship. Brinkmanship refers to a strategy of increasing the shared risk of war by the means of threat, bluff, deadlines, and walkout in order to force other party do our requests.
