2010 | Skripsi | Ilmu Hubungan InternasionalThe main purpose of this thesis is to dis cuss about the reasons why the United States blocked PRC’s attempt to take over the Union Oil Company of California (Unocal). In 2005, PRC, with its national energy company, the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), bade for Unocal higher than Chevron did. Based on the higher bid, the Chinese company was supposed to win the take over process. However, because the U.S. Congress passed some House Resolutions to block PRC’s attempt, the China National Offshore Oil Corporation failed to win and Chevron succeeded to take over Unocal. Therefore, this thesis will answer this question; Why did the United States block CNOOC’s attempt to take over Unocal even though the Chinese company bade higher than Chevron did? What the United States did could be expla ined by using the concepts of geopolitics, geostrategy, and Zbigniew Brzezinzki’s Grand Chessboard. Geopolitics refers to analysis of spatial relations, boundaries, resources, and other aspects of space in a particular political area based on national interest. It is a framework of using space as a basis of explaining states behavior in international politics. Geostrategy refers to strategies implemented by countries with the concern and usage of geopolitical aspects. It is also the geographic direction of a state’s foreign policy where a state concentrates its efforts by projecting military power and directing diplomatic activity. Zbigniew Brzezinzki’s Grand Chessboard refers to the United States’ geostrategic imperatives in preserving its hegemony and controlling energy resources in Eurasia. The blockade done by U.S. is related to the state’s geopolitics and geostrategy in Eurasia. In summary, there will be three focuses on the research. First, explaining the take over process and the blockade. Second, exp laining U.S.’ geostrategies in Eurasia, especially in the Middle East and Caspian Sea Basin area. Third, arguing the reasons that urged U.S. to block CNOOC’s attempt to take over Unocal. Keywords: Geopolitics, Geostrategy, CNOOC, Unocal.
