The main purpose of this thesis is discussing about how China formulates its foreign policy toward Taiwan regarding the dispute over Taiwan’s international status. The concern is effort strategy of Chinese government to solve the Taiwan’s problem which is conducted under Hu Jintao’s regime. Compared to the previous regimes, Chinese government under Hu’s regime takes a more conciliatory and cooperative approaches when dealing with the government of Taiwan in order to solve the dispute over Taiwan’s international status. It can be seen from the growing interactions and cooperations between the two in any lately days, especially in the economic and trade relations. This selection of strategy and policy formulated by Hu’s government raises a question, regarding the options of alternative strategies; considering all of the mighty military power and capabilities it has over Taiwan, why don’t Chinese government under Hu Jintao’s regime use a more aggresive and assertive set of policies manifested in direct military attack toward Taiwan in order to solve the problem between the two? What are the factors that influenced the formulation of China’s policy toward Taiwan? In sum there will be two focuses in the research. First, explaining the strategy of China’s policy toward Taiwan under Hu’s regime. Second, arguing what factors influence the preferences of Chinese government in formulating it’s policy toward Taiwan. Keywords: China, Taiwan, strategy
