PERGESERAN POSISI AUSTRALIA DALAM ISU LINGKUNGAN: DARI ANTI KE PRO RATIFIKASI PROTOKOL KYOTO

Greenhouse gases is one of the greatest challenges confronting the international community. So this paper will be focus on the commitment the international community, especially Australia to look for solution about global environment cases. Australia’s economy and environment are highly susceptible to the impact of climate change. From the first, Australia do not ratify the Kyoto Protocol. Australia’s national interest is depend on the US interest. But, after Rudd become Prime Minister, the Australian government views that climate change as the challenge of their country. That is why the first act of the new government was to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. The government has committed to reduce greenhouse gases emissions soon. A leadership role is play here. With their national interest, Australia shown that Australia wants to be a good international citizen by ratified the Kyoto Protocol. Besides, Australia has the other reasons why they want to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. There are three motives why Australia ratified the Kyoto Protocol, first is political reasons, then economy, and ideology. Leadership personality also give influence to this ratification. Finally, with this ratification, Australia’s approach to climate change is based on three pillars; reducing Australia’s GHGs emissions; adapting to the climate change that they can’t avoid, and helping to shape a global solution.
