Energy is a key strategic issue for China’s economic development, social stability, and national security. China’s consumption of energy has risen dramatically, caused by the rapid economic growth and has resulted in a rising demand for energy resources, particularly oil. Prospects for increased domestic production, however, appear to be more limited. The widening gap between consumption and production means that China will become increasingly dependent on imports to satisfy its growing oil and gas requirements. As such, China sees energy shortages as one of the biggest potential threats. Given these realities, China realizes the importance of international cooperation in achieving energy security. One of the main partner on the China’s energy cooperation is Africa. China currently imports a quarter of its total oil imports from Africa, and Sudan is one of the China’s largest partner of the energy cooperation. China has invested heavily in Sudan, both in the oil and the economic sectors. However, China’s presence in Sudan has it consequences on economic and political issues, nationally and globally.
