2010 | Skripsi | Ilmu KomunikasiMass media is an agent of reality constructions. In fact, it is a subject that constructs reality with all its ideas, biases and preferences. Therefore, news is a result of reality constructions which involve ideas, ideologies and values of reporters or media. In constructing a reality, media relies on its policy in the level of individual, organization, ideology and extra media, so that every media tends to have different strategies in constructing a reality. One of the strategies that media use to construct reality is framing. Framing can be defined as an effort to select some aspects of a perceived reality and make them more salient in a communicating text. Framing turns to be a stronger strategy when the happenings or issues being published are considered critical, controversial, or having big impacts to people, i.e. terrorism issues. Terrorism itself is an extraordinary case which cannot be viewed as an act of crime only, since it is closely related also with sociological, political, economical, and cultural (including religious) contexts. Those are some factors that make terrorism issues become critical and sensitive. Framing done in media also has a tendency to change from time to time. This change is activated by social and political factors that develop dynamically once in a while. This research focuses on the comparison of framing strategy in terrorism issues based on two aspects. The first aspect is seen from two written media, Republika and The Jakarta Post, which have different background on their sociohistory and ideology. By studying the comparison of framing strategy from the two media which each represents its ideology and politics, the writer evaluates the ideas and positions of the two media towards the terrorism issues. The second aspect is seen from the time order. In this aspect, the writer compares the framing strategy in each media, but in two different periods of time so that the consistency of each media in viewing the terrorism issues is shown clearly. Keywords: mass media, construction of reality, news framing, terrorism, ideology
