With the down fall of the Soviet Union as a superpower, Russia was born as an independent nation. Its influence in the international community has dwindling ever since. That fact is definitely a challenge for new Russian leaders. Boris Yeltsin, the first post-Soviet leader tried to implement the free market economy and democratization that eventually ended up in economic and political chaos made worse by the economic crisis that hit Russia back then. Russia simply lost its status as a great power. Consequently, Boris Yeltsin stepped down and was succeeded by Vladimir Putin as an acting president before he won the Russian presidency for the following to terms of power. Russia under Vladimir Putin made clear of its vision – to restore its supremacy as a great power. Therefore, Vladimir Putin established suitable domestic and foreign policy. Domestic policies in the fields of economics, politics, and military were made to create the proper pre-conditions for its resurrection. The results are political stability, strong economic growth supported by the energy sector, and a military strength that boosts its foreign policy of becoming a great power. In order to reach that goal, Russian foreign policy under Vladimir Putin tended to be assertive and pragmatic and even in between East and West. Vladimir Putin also made oil and gas as his soft power for his national ambition, regaining the great power status. It is only fair to say that Vladimir Putin’s policies were effective enough for Russia to regain its great power status. Putin proved to the world that Russia can rise from its down fall on “its own path.” Keywords : great power status, domestic policy, foreign policy, Vladimir Putin
