Regionalisasi ASEAN sebagai Upaya Integrasi Ekonomi Regional

Regionalism and regional economic integration are considered as major issues in the study of international cooperation among countries in the specific region and international political economy. Many countries in the world join with one or more regional organizations in order to help develop their domestic needs in the terms of economic and political matters. Regional organizations have become such a solution to overcome domestic problems and a weapon to gain higher bargaining positions in international relations constellation. This phenomenon spreads worldwide and resulting a lot of regional organizations with their own objectives and goals. ASEAN is an existing regional organization since 1967 with ten countries in Southeast Asia region as its members. This non-supranational regional organization gains supports from another countries and organizations and also faces obstacles and threats from inside and outside the region. The existing external threats become major obstacles dealing with ASEAN’s effort to achieve regional economic integration. Developing cooperation with another countries or regions is considered a good effort to overcome the problems coming out along the way. Briefly, this thesis would give the overview of the current situation in the region and explain how ASEAN deals with the external threats to overcome the problems. The institutionalization of ASEAN Free Trade Area, ASEAN Plus Three, and ASEAN Economic Community will be elaborated more to see their effectiveness in achieving ASEAN’s objectives in developing its region. The purpose of this thesis is to analytically describe whether ASEAN’s regionalization could be an effective way to overcome the external threats to further help ASEAN to achieve regional economic integration in the future.
