KEPENTINGAN EKONOMI POLITIK AUSTRALIA DALAM KERJASAMA REGIONAL ASIA PASIFIK (1989-2009)

Australia is a small British colony that lies far on remote Asia and Pacific which makes the government and its citizens have always been aware of the security issue and putted it as the primary national interest. As far Australia has three different policies to create its national security which came along with the change of global order. United Kingdom as mother colony was the main priority and ally for Australia to gain its security in Asia. WW II created US as one of new world power that made Australia decided to change its direction and heading to US for gaining more reliable and powerful security ally to protect it from the wild Asia. The new world order made by US President George Bush late on 1990’s has brought a brand new sight to the Australian government about the meaning of new security that went more complex than classic security which was consist only for threat and military issues. The new “united world” on 1990’s emphasized in cooperation especially in economic issue made the government of Australia realized that the security would be more efficient through combination of “threat-secured” and another “significant issues-secured” as economic, social and culture. The new Australian national policy so called Multidimensional Policy has been made under Bob Hawke’s administration that emphasized the importance of cooperation on multi-aspect issue to build a comprehensive security, especially in Asia region. Through some of regional cooperation policy, Australia tries to running its Multidimensional Policy, embracing every nation in its regional to cooperate and stand together to gain its security interest which not only in classic security meaning but also security in more complete and complex way such as in political and economic. The policy runs in good way since Asia and Pacific as a strange-threatening region for Australia has turn into a dynamic region with remarkable improvement of economy and development. Regional cooperation has been a key for Australian government to gain all of its security interest, including classic-security meaning either modern- security meaning like economy and politic. Cairns Group, APEC, AANZCER, and EAS are examples of cooperation policy that Australia has engaged since 1989’s to gain its multi-aspect security.
