KEPENTINGAN KEAMANAN AUSTRALIA DALAM EAST ASIA SUMMIT

Abstract The security concept of international relations has always been changing and developing. Traditional approach, which only see the military aspect and the state as the main object of analysis, is no longer in favor with the development of the security studies in the current international politics. The globalization process, with all of its characteristics and implications, has changed the characteristics of security as well. As a consequence, many global non military issues are capable of affecting the security sector. Then, it leads to the emergence of the New Security Agenda as the new security concept. The New Security Agenda is affecting many countries and become common problems. The most effective way in addressing those issues is to form mechanisms for countries to cooperate and find solutions. International organization, especially regional organization, provides mechanisms for countries to cooperate in the big number of participants. Regional organizations also provide additional benefits in solving global issues confronted by countries in the same region. Australia realizes those conditions and already become a member of many international organizations. Australia is a very active participant in those organizations. Australia believes that by joining international organization, it would be able to play better role in achieving its strategic interests, including security interests. Australia has special interests in forming regional organization since its region always play a vital part and has main priority in Australia’s foreign policy. In addressing global problems of the New Security Agenda, Australia believes that regional will play very important roles. Additionally, some global issues are striking at the region. Australia should cooperate with other countries in the region to solve these problems by forming regional organization to achieve its security interests. The latest regional organization is the East Asia Summit (EAS). The participants of this organization believe that the cooperation will lead to further and deeper integration with the formation of regional architecture. As a consequence, it will be easier to solve the common problems and produce better outcome. This organization is still the early stage of integration. But by this organization, Australia and the countries of East Asia has been able to undertake some actions confronting common new security problems, such as avian influenza, energy and climate change issues. Australia and the countries in the East Asia could best achieve their security interests through their participation in the East Asia Summit.
