Abstract This research attempts to draw guanxi as an economic strategy of overseas Chinese businessmen in Indonesia to run their business within familial linkage as a resistance method due to low-trust society at home. Guanxi was a widespread phenomenon within Chinese traders both in colonial period and the New Order, which is performed a low-trust society under their ruled. This phenomenon showed what argues by Francis Fukuyama in his thesis of trust, in which people in low-trust society tends to direct the need of trust to their family and relatives. In regard to this phenomenon, the research examines the socio-political situation due to the policies of ruling government toward the (Indonesian) Chinese in colonial period and the New Order, to perform the condition of low-trust society. Also, it shows how guanxi generates the international links of overseas Chinese businessmen and explains how the erzast capitalism in Indonesia under Soeharto’s New Order occurred.
